Dental Crowns An Overview

Whether you need to replace an existing cap or have a tooth that needs a crown, New Bern, NC dentist Dr. Stephen Hoard can create a custom dental crown that looks and feels like a natural tooth. Dr. Hoard uses a variety of materials including porcelain for a highly aesthetic, natural looking restoration. Dental crowns are a restorative dentistry procedure we offer to New Bern, NC.

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cover, or cap, placed over a tooth that is decayed, cracked or damaged. Tooth caps are used when a filling is an insufficient restoration. Dr. Hoard also uses dental crowns in cosmetic dentistry treatments to improve appearance of teeth that are misshapen, misaligned or discolored.

Dental Crowns What to Expect

Initial Visit – Your first visit with Dr. Hoard will include a thorough examination of the teeth, gums, jaw joints and other support structures. Using diagnostic x-rays, molds and impressions, Dr. Hoard will look for hidden problems that could be impacting the look and health of your smile. Dr. Hoard will inform you on the various options you have for dental crowns and help you make the best choice.

Tooth Preparation – Once the treatment plan is finalized, Dr. Hoard will remove a small amount of the natural tooth structure to allow the dental crown to fit over your tooth comfortably and securely. Dental crowns typically last for around 5 to 15 years. Regularly visiting the dentist for check-ups and following dental hygiene instructions can help make your crowns last longer.

Can I get a cavity under a crown?

Yes. Cavities can form under tooth crowns. Plaque can collect in the tiny gap between your tooth and the crown. This can cause a cavity to form. This will help reduce the risk of cavities forming under crowns.

What age do people get crowns?

There is no age minimum age requirement for tooth crowns. However, most dentists will not recommend individuals under 18 years old get tooth crowns. There are exceptions. If your tooth damage is severe enough, a dentist might recommend a tooth to protect the original tooth. A dentist can apply a porcelain crown to protect the original tooth.
